Application Checklist

  • 1. Submit the following material to the Graduate School via the Online Application:

    • Online application form
    • 3 letters of recommendation. Letters must be submitted electronically by your recommenders no later than December 31. Please do NOT send paper letters by mail.
    • Statement of purpose. Attaching a PDF or word document is not enough, please make sure you copy and paste the content of your statement of purpose on the section established for that purpose as well (i.e. as if you were writing it directly on the web page).
    • Application fee payment. The application fee must be received (not postmarked) by December 5 to be considered for funding. The final admissions deadline is February 1.
    • After you complete and submit your online application with the Graduate School, you will automatically receive an email from the Graduate School with your ID number. You will need your ID number to access your own personalized web address in OASIS (online application information system). Please save that e-mail message for future reference.
    • If after a week you have not received the email from the Graduate School, first check your spam/junk mail. If it's not there, contact the Graduate School at gradadmiss@grad.wisc.edu, or contact us at gradpro@ssc.wisc.edu requesting your ID number
      • To check your application status you can always log back into your application and you will see a link to OASIS from there. You can log into My UW to access OASIS as well.
      • You will need to activate your NetID and password using My UW-Madison portal at my.wisc.edu. To activate your NetID, click on the ACTIVATE NETID button located on the My UW Madison login screen. Enter your 10 digit student ID number and birth date. The NetID you create and password you enter are keys to your access to the MyUW portal. Make a record of it and keep it private. Follow the instructions at http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=1140. If you are unsure about your NetID and password, contact the DoIT (Division of Information Technology) Help Desk at (608) 264-4357.
    • More information regarding the TOEFL requirement, the online application, fee information, and Graduate School FAQs (frequently asked questions) is available at the Graduate School admissions page.

  • 2. Mail Transcripts to the Economics Department

    • Two official transcripts or academic records must be submitted to the Department of Economics for all undergraduate and graduate courses you have taken. If you have taken courses from another institution that are not reflected on the main transcript, you will need to send a transcript for the courses not reflected.
    • Transcripts must be received by December 5 to be considered for funding.
    • International academic records must be in the original language accompanied by an official English translation. Your school should provide an official translation of your documents; otherwise have a translation done by your school or an official translator. In some countries these people are also notaries. Do not submit an evaluation from a credential evaluation service in lieu of a translation.
    • It takes at least one month for transcripts to show as received on the system. Please do not contact us unless more than a month has passed since the date that you submitted them.
    • Send both transcripts in the same packet to:

  • 3. Submit Electronic Documents to the Economics Department

  • After you have paid your application fee to the graduate school, you will receive an email from the Economics Department admission portal (Gradapply). Use the link, and the login, and password in that email to submit material electronically. It may take up to 5 business days after you have paid your application fee to receive this email from the Economics Department. Take this into consideration when looking at your deadline dates. If you are reapplying, the login and password will be the same as the first application. If you do not have it anymore you will need to contact us at gradpro@ssc.wisc.edu with login and password as the subject. Once you have logged in, submit the following items electronically to the Economics Department admission portal by December 31 if you want to be considered for funding:

    • Math Preparation Form (pdf; word document)
Students entering the graduate program are required to have:
      • 3-course sequence in calculus
      • 1 course in linear algebra
      • 1 course in mathematical statistics
These prerequisites are a bare minimum, and additional background in mathematics and in graduate-level economics courses can ease the transition into the program. A detailed description of the department's expectations about students' mathematics preparation, both upon entry to the program and upon completion of first-year coursework, can be found Math Requirements for Incoming Graduate Students.
    • Writing Sample
    • All applicants must submit a writing sample in English. The writing sample can be a research paper or an article demonstrating your ability to do research and present your research in a written form. There is no page limit and the topic is not restricted to economics.
    • Update your Transcripts
If you wish to update your transcripts with final semester grades, scan them and upload them on the Economics Department admission portal (Gradapply). Upon being offered admission, you will need to provide the official transcripts or academic records with the final grades to the department.
    • S.O.P.
If for some reason you forgot to copy and paste the content of your statement of purpose on the section established for that purpose on the application form (i.e. as if you were writing it directly on the webpage) you will need to upload the PDF file on the Economics Department admission portal (Gradapply).
    • Any other material
Any additional material that you would like the committee to have for review should be uploaded on the Economics Department admission portal (Gradapply) by yourself.

  • 4. Have ETS send your TOEFL scores or EILTS (if required) and GRE scores to the Graduate School.
    • GMAT scores will not be accepted in place of GRE scores. The UW-Madison institutional code is 1846.
    • It is very important you use the same name and spelling on the application as you used on the test form to avoid any delays on the arrival of scores on you file.
    • The format of the date of birth is very important too. Please use month/day/year to avoid delays.
    • TOEFL scores or EILTS are accepted if they are within two years of the start of the admission term.
    • GRE scores are accepted if they are within five years of the start of the admission term.
    • Follow this link to see if you are exempted from the TOEFL requirement
