This is a call for applications for a scholarship that will consider both financial need and academic merit. The application deadline is Monday, April 9, 2007. The scholarship will cover $4000 of tuition for 2007-08.
The scholarship is generously funded by Susan M. Meyers, a 1961 UW-Madison graduate who has used her Economics education every day of her life. She focused on labor economics and worked for the U.S. Dept. of Labor, the U.S. Navy Finance Center and her family financial consulting firm until retirement. She now lives in Oak Park, Illinois.
To be eligible, you must:
Both financial need and academic merit will be considered in awarding the scholarship. All eligible sophomores who are declared or prospective Economics majors are encouraged to apply, whether or not they qualify for need-based financial aid.
To apply, send an email message to Albert Chen (achen@ssc.wisc.edu), the assistant to the Department Chair. The subject line should read “Susan M. Meyers Scholarship.” Attach your application as a PDF file, named meyers.last.first.PDF (where Last and First are your names). Alternatively, you may attach a text file, with .txt as the file suffix instead of PDF.
Include the following information in the application file:
1. Your name, student ID, classification, whether you plan option A or option B (math emphasis), whether you currently (this academic year) have qualified for need-based financial aid, whether you plan for honors in the major, email address, phone number, and mailing address. (Be sure to provide an email address that will work over the summer.)
2. (a) A list of the Economics courses you have completed or are taking, and the grade you received (completed courses only). (b)(i) Overall GPA, and (ii) GPA in Economics courses as of time of application. (We will obtain transcripts for the finalists. This summary information is intended to help us at a preliminary stage.)
3. A one-page statement (single spaced, one-inch margins) that includes any information that you think might be useful to the committee that will select the scholarship recipient. Examples might include: career plans, descriptions of relevant courses taken outside the Economics Department, descriptions of particular accomplishments related to economics, descriptions of summer or part-time jobs that involve economics.
Please direct questions to Albert Chen (achen@ssc.wisc.edu). We expect to announce the inaugural Susan M. Meyers Scholar by April 16, 2007.
